Broussonetia papyrifera leaf extract (PLE) is a botanical extract derived from the leaves of the paper mulberry tree, a species in the Moraceae family. Primarily investigated in preclinical models, PLE exhibits significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antidiabetic properties. In the context of psoriasis, it has been shown to alleviate imiquimod-induced skin lesions by inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways, leading to reduced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-17A. The extract is rich in bioactive compounds, including flavonoids (e.g., chlorogenic acid, vitexin, scutellarin), alkaloids, and polysaccharides. Beyond dermatology, research suggests potential applications in type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and colitis, often mediated through the activation of Nrf2 and AMPK pathways. It is currently in the research stage and has not yet transitioned to clinical development by a commercial pharmaceutical sponsor.
