Broussonetia papyrifera pollen, derived from the Paper Mulberry tree, is a potent aeroallergen used clinically as an extract for the diagnosis of Type I hypersensitivity reactions, including allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma. The pollen contains several allergenic proteins, with Bro p 3 (a 10 kDa non-specific lipid transfer protein 1, nsLTP1) identified as a major allergen. Other identified allergenic components include proteins with molecular weights of 15 kDa, 33 kDa, 40 kDa, and 72 kDa. In diagnostic settings, the extract is used in skin prick testing (SPT) and in vitro assays to detect allergen-specific IgE. It demonstrates significant cross-reactivity with other Moraceae species (such as Morus alba) and Humulus scandens.
