Brown Ammonium Mixture

Brown Ammonium Mixture, also known as Compound Ammonium Chloride and Glycyrrhiza Oral Solution, is a compound oral pharmaceutical preparation primarily used as an expectorant and antitussive. Its main active ingredients include ammonium chloride and glycyrrhiza (licorice) extract, often combined with other components such as camphor, anhydrous morphine, or guaifenesin. Ammonium chloride works by irritating the gastric mucosa to reflexively increase bronchial secretions, thereby thinning mucus and making it easier to expel. Glycyrrhiza extract provides a soothing effect on the pharyngeal mucosa and helps suppress cough. This mixture is commonly used to alleviate cough and discomfort associated with upper respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, and colds. It is often prepared as a hospital-made formulation, notably by Beijing Union Medical College Hospital.
