Overview

Brozopine sodium is a small molecule neuroprotective agent developed by Zhejiang Aoxiang Pharmaceutical for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. It is a sodium salt derivative of 3-n-butylphthalide (NBP), a compound originally isolated from celery seeds that has been used clinically in China for its ability to improve outcomes following stroke. Brozopine sodium is designed to enhance the solubility and pharmacokinetic properties of the parent phthalide. Its mechanism of action is multi-targeted, primarily focusing on the protection of mitochondrial function, reduction of oxidative stress, and improvement of cerebral microcirculation. By stabilizing the blood-brain barrier and inhibiting neuronal apoptosis, brozopine sodium aims to limit the extent of brain damage and promote functional recovery during the acute phase of an ischemic event.
