Overview
Bryophyllum pinnatum (also known as Kalanchoe pinnata) is a succulent perennial plant from the Crassulaceae family used in anthroposophic and conventional medicine for its tocolytic, sedative, and anxiolytic properties. In clinical research led by Christian Haslinger at the University Hospital Zurich, a 50% chewable tablet formulation manufactured by Weleda AG is being evaluated for the treatment of anxiety in women hospitalized with signs of preterm birth. The plant's therapeutic effects are attributed to its content of bufadienolides (such as bryophyllin A and bersaldegenin derivatives) and flavonoids. Mechanistically, it is thought to inhibit myometrial contractility by antagonizing oxytocin-induced pathways and potentially modulating GABAergic signaling, making it a candidate for managing both preterm labor and associated psychological distress.
