Overview

Bryostatin 5 is a member of the bryostatin family of macrocyclic lactone compounds known as "bryostatins," which are isolated from the marine bryozoan Bugula neritina. These molecules are potent modulators of protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms. Bryostatin 5, like other bryostatins, is investigated as a small molecule pharmaceutical for its potential use primarily in neuroprotection and cancer. Bryostatin compounds act by binding and modulating protein kinase C isoforms, which leads to downstream effects on synaptic growth and repair, reduction of amyloid-beta accumulation, and modulation of immune and inflammatory responses. Bryostatin 5 is distinct from bryostatin-1 and has not reached advanced clinical investigation in major diseases, but shares core biological activity[1][3][4].
