Overview

BSAM-2 (Blood-Stage Antigen Mixture 2) is a recombinant protein-based vaccine candidate designed to target the asexual blood stage of the *Plasmodium falciparum* malaria parasite. It is a bivalent formulation composed of two critical merozoite surface antigens: Apical Membrane Antigen 1 (AMA1) and the 42 kDa fragment of Merozoite Surface Protein 1 (MSP1-42). These proteins are essential for the parasite's ability to recognize and invade human erythrocytes. Developed by the NIAID, BSAM-2 is intended to elicit high titers of growth-inhibitory antibodies that block the invasion process, thereby reducing parasite burden and preventing clinical disease. In clinical evaluation, it has been combined with adjuvants such as Alhydrogel and the Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) agonist CPG 7909 to enhance immunogenicity.
