BSG-Fc is a recombinant fusion protein (immunoadhesin) being developed by Planet Biotechnology for the treatment and prevention of malaria caused by *Plasmodium falciparum*. The molecule consists of the extracellular domain of human Basigin (BSG, also known as CD147) fused to an immunoglobulin Fc region. Basigin is the essential host receptor on erythrocytes that interacts with the *P. falciparum* Rh5 protein to facilitate parasite invasion. BSG-Fc acts as a decoy receptor, competitively binding to Rh5 on the parasite surface and preventing it from engaging with native Basigin on red blood cells, thereby inhibiting infection. The project is currently in the preclinical stage with research-grade protein available.
