Overview

BSY001 is a small molecule antiviral drug developed by China National Biotec Group (CNBG), a subsidiary of Sinopharm, for the treatment of infections caused by orthopoxviruses, including monkeypox, smallpox, and cowpox. The drug functions as an inhibitor of the orthopoxvirus VP37 envelope wrapping protein (also known as p37), which is highly conserved across the genus. VP37 is essential for the conversion of intracellular mature virus (IMV) into extracellular enveloped virus (EEV), a form of the virus required for efficient cell-to-cell spread and systemic dissemination within the host. By blocking the formation of EEV, BSY001 limits the spread of the virus and the progression of the disease. It is currently being evaluated in Phase I clinical trials to assess its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic profile in healthy subjects using single and multiple ascending dose regimens administered via injection.
