Overview

BTA9881 is a small molecule antiviral drug developed for the treatment of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections. It acts as a fusion glycoprotein inhibitor, specifically targeting the RSV F protein to block the process by which RSV infects host cells. By binding to a three-fold-symmetric pocket within the central cavity of the prefusion conformation of RSV F, BTA9881 stabilizes this conformation and prevents membrane fusion required for viral entry. The drug was originally developed by Biota Holdings (later Aviragen Therapeutics) and has been evaluated in phase I clinical trials as an orally available agent intended to reduce or clear RSV infection, particularly in infants and young children[1][2][3][6].
