Overview
BTP-alpha (also known as BTP-α or PPT) is a highly selective small-molecule agonist of the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα). Developed by Bayer, it is frequently utilized in preclinical research to investigate the cardiovascular and pulmonary protective effects of estrogen signaling. BTP-alpha has demonstrated significant efficacy in animal models of pulmonary hypertension, where it exerts endothelium-protective effects, improves endothelial-dependent vasodilation, and reduces pulmonary vascular remodeling. Its selectivity for ERα over the estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) allows for the targeted activation of specific estrogenic pathways, making it a valuable tool for studying sex-based differences in disease progression and potential therapeutic interventions in vascular diseases.
