Overview

BTX 1801 is a topical and intranasal antimicrobial drug consisting of a high‑concentration synthetic cannabidiol (CBD) formulation delivered using Botanix Pharmaceuticals’ proprietary Permetrex skin and mucosal delivery technology, developed as a broad‑spectrum Gram‑positive antibiotic for decolonisation of Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin‑resistant S. aureus (MRSA), and prevention of serious skin and post‑surgical infections.[1][4][5][3] Preclinical studies show BTX 1801 rapidly kills Gram‑positive pathogens with potency comparable to vancomycin and daptomycin, eradicates MRSA from human skin explants within 24 hours, disrupts bacterial biofilms, and exhibits anti‑inflammatory activity via a novel CBD‑mediated mechanism that appears to have a low propensity for resistance development.[1][3][4] In a randomised, double‑blind, vehicle‑controlled Phase 2a nasal decolonisation trial in healthy adults colonised with S. aureus, both ointment and gel formulations of BTX 1801 were safe, well tolerated, and achieved significantly higher and sustained nasal Staph eradication rates versus vehicle, supporting further development for infection prevention in high‑risk populations such as surgical and haemodialysis patients.[2][5][11]
