Overview
Bu fei hua yu is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation, most commonly encountered as Bufei Huayu capsules, designed to treat chronic respiratory conditions by tonifying the lung and resolving blood stasis. It is primarily indicated for stable Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and pulmonary fibrosis. The formula typically comprises several botanical and animal-derived ingredients, including *Astragalus membranaceus* (Huangqi), *Panax notoginseng* (Sanqi), and *Pheretima aspergillum* (Dilong). Mechanistically, it exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects by inhibiting the TGF-beta1/Smad signaling pathway, reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-alpha, and improving pulmonary microcirculation. Clinical evidence suggests that it helps reduce the frequency of acute exacerbations, improves lung function parameters (such as FEV1), and enhances the quality of life in patients with chronic lung Qi deficiency and blood stasis patterns.
