Overview
Bu Pi Yi Shen Formula (BYF), also known as Jian Pi Yi Shen Formula, is a patented traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation used in the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is composed of multiple herbs, including Astragalus mongholicus, Codonopsis pilosula, and Salvia miltiorrhiza. [9] A registered clinical trial is investigating its efficacy in slowing the progression of Stage 4 CKD. [9] Preclinical research suggests BYF has a reno-protective effect by reducing kidney injury, fibrosis, and inflammation through multiple mechanisms. [3] These include the inhibition of the tryptophan-kynurenic acid-aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) pathway, suppression of the TLR4-mediated NF-κB signaling pathway, restoration of mitochondrial function, and modulation of the gut microbiome to improve intestinal barrier function. [3, 5, 6]
