Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bu Shen Huo Xue Fang (BSHXF) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula used primarily for its kidney-tonifying and blood-activating properties. It is composed of multiple herbs—typically including Radix rehmanniae, Radix bupleuri, Semen cuscutae, Cortex eucommiae, Fructus lycii (goji berry), Radix angelicae sinensis (dong quai), Cornu cervi pantotrichum (deer antler), Herba cistanches, Myrrh, Rhizoma dulcis and Safflower—though the exact composition may vary by source[3][4]. The main active compounds identified in the decoction include aucubin, tanshinol and tanshinone II A[1]. BSHXF has been studied for several indications: - Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD): It promotes nucleus pulposus cell viability and extracellular matrix deposition while inhibiting cell senescence and inflammation. Its protective effects are thought to involve modulation of NF-κB and Wnt signaling pathways as well as reduction of oxidative stress through metabolic pathway regulation[1][5]. - Osteoarthritis: The formula acts via multicomponent/multitarget mechanisms involving tumor necrosis factor signaling pathways among others; it relieves joint swelling/pain and improves function[4]. - Diabetic nephropathy: BSHX decoction alleviates podocyte injury in high-glucose conditions both in vitro and potentially in vivo by tonifying deficiency (“kidney”) and invigorating blood circulation according to TCM theory[3]. - Spinal cord injury neuroprotection has also been reported in animal models[2]. The mechanism of action is complex due to its multi-herb nature but centers on anti-inflammatory effects (NF-κB inhibition), antioxidative stress modulation via metabolic pathways such as glutathione metabolism/citrate cycle/tryptophan metabolism etc., promotion of tissue repair/regeneration processes at cellular level.
