Overview

Buccal fat pad-derived stem cells (BFPSCs) are a population of multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) harvested from the buccal fat pad, a specialized adipose tissue in the cheek. These cells are highly valued in regenerative medicine, particularly in oral and maxillofacial surgery, due to their ease of access through a minimally invasive procedure, low donor-site morbidity, and robust osteogenic (bone-forming) and angiogenic (blood vessel-forming) potential. BFPSCs work by differentiating into osteoblasts and cementoblasts while secreting essential growth factors such as bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which facilitate the repair of critical-size bone defects and alveolar ridge augmentation.
