Overview

Buchholzia coriacea is a medicinal plant native to West and Central Africa, traditionally used for treating diabetes, infections, inflammation, gastrointestinal disorders, rheumatism, fever, cough, malaria, sleeping sickness, and cancer-related diseases[1][2][3][4]. Its bioactive extracts (notably methanol and ethanol seed/leaf extracts) have demonstrated diverse pharmacological activities including antimicrobial, cytotoxic (anticancer), hypoglycemic, antihypercholesterolemic, anthelmintic, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective, antitrypanosomal, antiplasmodial, and anti-inflammatory effects[1][2][3][4][5]. Active compounds isolated include novel and known alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and others. Documented mechanisms include inhibition of pathogen growth (bacterial, fungal, parasitic), cytotoxicity to cancer cell lines, modulation of oxidative stress pathways, nitric oxide modulation, and immunostimulation[1][2][3][4][5]. Toxicity studies in animals up to 5000 mg/kg have found no mortality or notable toxicity, suggesting a wide safety margin[4][5]. There is no evidence of clinical drug formulations or approvals for these indications; research remains primarily preclinical and ethnopharmacological.
