Buckberg Cardi-Braun

Buckberg Cardi-Braun is a specialized cardioplegia solution manufactured by B. Braun, designed for use in the Buckberg protocol for myocardial protection during major cardiac surgery involving extracorporeal circulation. The solution is typically a blood-based cardioplegia, consisting of a mixture of the patient's own blood and a crystalloid concentrate. Its primary mechanism of action involves the induction of rapid, reversible diastolic cardiac arrest through a high concentration of potassium ions, which depolarizes the myocardial cell membrane and prevents electrical and mechanical activity. This state of arrest significantly reduces the heart's oxygen consumption and metabolic demand during the period of aortic cross-clamping. The formulation also includes buffers such as tromethamine (THAM) to counteract ischemia-induced acidosis, and other components like magnesium and dextrose to support metabolic requirements and reduce calcium-mediated injury during the ischemic period and subsequent reperfusion.
