Overview

Buckwheat honey is a dark, monofloral honey produced by honey bees (*Apis mellifera*) from the nectar of buckwheat (*Fagopyrum esculentum*) flowers. It is distinguished from other honey varieties by its high mineral content, robust antioxidant capacity, and a unique profile of phenolic acids, including gallic, p-hydroxybenzoic, and p-coumaric acids. The honey contains significant levels of rutin, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, and various melanoidin precursors that function as transition metal chelators. Clinically, buckwheat honey has been investigated as a natural antitussive for the management of acute cough associated with upper respiratory tract infections (URTI), where it acts as a demulcent to soothe the pharyngeal mucosa and exhibits antimicrobial properties against pathogens such as *Bacillus subtilis* and *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. Its high antioxidant activity, often compared favorably to Manuka honey, is attributed to its rich concentration of polyphenols and organic acids.
