Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Budesonide (Cortiment) is a synthetic glucocorticoid with high local anti-inflammatory activity and low systemic bioavailability due to extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver. Developed by Cosmo Pharmaceuticals and licensed to Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Cortiment is specifically designed for the induction of remission in patients with mild-to-moderate active ulcerative colitis. The drug employs the Multi-Matrix System (MMX) technology, which consists of a multi-layered tablet structure that delays release until it reaches the terminal ileum and then ensures a slow, uniform distribution of budesonide throughout the entire length of the colon. This targeted delivery mechanism allows for effective treatment of colonic inflammation while significantly reducing the risk of systemic corticosteroid-related side effects compared to conventional steroids like prednisolone.
