Budesonide + azelastine is a combination of two intranasal drugs used primarily for the treatment of allergic rhinitis. Budesonide is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid that acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor and modulating gene expression, thereby reducing inflammation in nasal tissues. Azelastine is a second-generation antihistamine that functions as a histamine H1-receptor antagonist, blocking the action of histamine and providing rapid relief from allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and nasal congestion. In addition to its antihistaminic effects, azelastine also stabilizes mast cells and inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators like interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha. Clinical studies have shown that combining these two agents provides additive or synergistic benefits in improving nasal patency and reducing symptom scores compared to either drug alone[1][6][8]. This combination targets both immediate allergic responses (via antihistaminic action) and longer-term inflammation (via corticosteroid action), making it effective for moderate to severe or uncontrolled allergic rhinitis.
