budesonide + calfactant

Budesonide + calfactant is a combination drug consisting of budesonide, a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory properties, and calfactant, an animal-derived pulmonary surfactant. This combination is administered intratracheally to preterm infants with severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) to prevent or reduce the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Budesonide acts by reducing inflammation in the lungs, while calfactant lowers alveolar surface tension and improves lung compliance. Clinical studies indicate that this combination may decrease BPD rates and mortality without significantly increasing adverse effects or disturbing surfactant function[1][5][6]. The therapy targets extremely preterm or very low birth weight infants at high risk for RDS and BPD.
