Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Budesonide + chlorhexidine gluconate is a combination therapy investigated for the treatment of COVID-19. Budesonide is a potent synthetic glucocorticoid with high local anti-inflammatory activity and minimal systemic effects, which helps reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract. Chlorhexidine gluconate is a bisbiguanide antiseptic with broad-spectrum activity against bacteria and enveloped viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. The combination is typically administered as a nasal spray (budesonide) and a gargle (chlorhexidine) to target the primary sites of viral replication and entry in the upper respiratory tract, aiming to reduce viral load and prevent disease progression. This protocol was notably studied by researchers at the Shanghai Fourth People's Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University.
