Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Budesonide + ciclesonide refers to a therapeutic regimen of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) evaluated by the National Taiwan University Hospital to determine the clinical and genetic factors influencing treatment efficacy in children with asthma. Budesonide is a non-halogenated glucocorticoid with high local anti-inflammatory potency and minimal systemic effects. Ciclesonide is a next-generation ICS prodrug that is activated by esterases in the lung to its active metabolite, desisobutyryl-ciclesonide (des-CIC). Both agents function as agonists of the glucocorticoid receptor, leading to the suppression of pro-inflammatory gene expression and the reduction of airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness. This specific combination was studied in a Phase 4 observational trial (NCT01444105) to optimize personalized asthma management in pediatric populations.
