Budesonide + montelukast is a combination therapy used primarily for the management of asthma, particularly in patients whose symptoms are not adequately controlled with inhaled corticosteroids alone. Budesonide is an inhaled synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid that exerts potent anti-inflammatory effects by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor and modulating gene expression to suppress airway inflammation. Montelukast is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist that selectively blocks the cysteinyl leukotriene type 1 (CysLT1) receptor, thereby inhibiting leukotriene-mediated bronchoconstriction, inflammation, and mucus production. The combination targets different inflammatory pathways in asthma pathophysiology—budesonide reduces broad airway inflammation while montelukast specifically inhibits leukotriene-driven processes—resulting in improved asthma control compared to monotherapy[2][4][5][6]. This combination has been shown to reduce asthma exacerbations, improve pulmonary function, and decrease nocturnal symptoms in both adults and children with persistent asthma.
