Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Budesonide MMX is an oral, once-daily, extended-release formulation of the synthetic glucocorticosteroid budesonide. It utilizes Multi-Matrix System (MMX) technology to deliver controlled and targeted release of budesonide throughout the entire colon. Budesonide acts as a potent topical anti-inflammatory agent with high affinity for the glucocorticoid receptor and low systemic bioavailability due to extensive first-pass hepatic metabolism. Budesonide MMX is primarily indicated for induction of remission in adults with active, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis who have not responded adequately to 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) therapy[1][4][5][6][7]. The formulation aims to maximize local efficacy in the colon while minimizing systemic corticosteroid side effects.
