Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Budesonide Respimat is an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) formulation developed by Boehringer Ingelheim for the treatment of asthma. It utilizes the proprietary Respimat Soft Mist Inhaler (SMI) technology, which delivers a slow-moving, long-lasting aerosol mist that enhances lung deposition and reduces oropharyngeal deposition compared to traditional pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) or dry powder inhalers (DPIs). As a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, budesonide exerts potent anti-inflammatory effects within the airways, reducing the recruitment and activation of inflammatory cells such as mast cells, eosinophils, and lymphocytes. This formulation was evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials to compare its efficacy and safety against the Turbohaler dry powder formulation in adult patients with moderate to severe asthma. Although the trials demonstrated therapeutic non-inferiority, Boehringer Ingelheim primarily focused on commercializing Respimat-based combination therapies rather than this specific budesonide monotherapy.
