Overview

Buffered regular human insulin is a short-acting recombinant human insulin formulation specifically designed for use in external (continuous) insulin pumps. It is similar in activity and action to standard regular human insulin but contains buffering agents to enhance stability and compatibility with pump devices. Like all insulins, it acts by binding to the insulin receptor on target cells (primarily muscle, fat, and liver), promoting glucose uptake from the bloodstream into tissues and inhibiting hepatic glucose production. This results in lowered blood glucose levels. Buffered formulations were developed to address issues of precipitation or instability that could occur with unbuffered insulins in pump reservoirs[5][2][10].
