Overview

BufferGel is a vaginal microbicide gel with spermicidal properties developed as a potential preventive medicine against HIV transmission. It functions through an acidic buffering mechanism designed to maintain the natural vaginal pH in the presence of semen, which can help inactivate HIV and other pathogens. The active ingredient is Carbopol 974P, a highly carboxylated polymer composed of lightly cross-linked polyacrylic acid with a broad-spectrum mechanism based on acidification of pathogens.
