Overview

Bufylline is a theophylline derivative and a member of the xanthine class, used primarily as a bronchodilator for the treatment of asthma and other obstructive airway diseases. It acts by relaxing smooth muscle in the airways, thereby improving airflow and reducing bronchospasm. Bufylline is classified as an anti-asthmatic agent, bronchodilator, and vasodilator. Its mechanism of action involves antagonism at adenosine receptor A1, which leads to relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. Like other xanthines, it may also have mild stimulant effects on the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. Bufylline is typically indicated for respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
