Overview

Bulaquine is a synthetic small molecule antimalarial drug belonging to the 8-aminoquinoline class, developed as a derivative of primaquine by the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) in India. It functions as both a gametocytocidal agent, targeting the gametocytes of *Plasmodium falciparum* to interrupt transmission, and an antirelapse agent, targeting the hypnozoites of *Plasmodium vivax*. It is typically prescribed for the radical cure of malaria in combination with chloroquine. The drug was developed in collaboration with Nicholas Piramal India Ltd and the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and is marketed in India under the brand name Aablaquin. Like other 8-aminoquinolines, caution is advised in patients with G6PD deficiency due to the risk of hemolysis.
