Overview

Bunamidine is a synthetic small molecule anthelmintic drug primarily used in veterinary medicine as an anti-parasitic agent for the treatment of tapeworm (cestode) infections, especially those caused by Taenia species, Echinococcus granulosus (dog tapeworm), and Hymenolepis diminuta (rat tapeworm)[2][7]. It was approved by the FDA for use in cats and dogs under the brand name Scolaban[1][5]. The mechanism of action involves disruption of the parasite's tegument, leading to reduced glucose uptake and exposure of subtegumental tissues to host digestive enzymes. This impairs energy metabolism—particularly through inhibition of mitochondrial functions—resulting in paralysis and death of the parasite[6][8]. Bunamidine is administered orally at doses ranging from 25–50 mg/kg body weight in dogs[1][5].
