Overview

A Bundibugyo ebolavirus vaccine candidate refers to any of several investigational vaccines designed to prevent Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV). As of mid-2026, the most prominent candidate is Moderna's mRNA-1469, an mRNA-based vaccine encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles that targets the BDBV glycoprotein (GP). This candidate entered Phase 1 clinical trials in Canada in 2026 with support from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). Other notable candidates in the CEPI-supported portfolio include IAVI's recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus-based vaccine (rVSVΔG/BDBV-GP), manufactured by Hilleman Laboratories, and the University of Oxford/Serum Institute of India's ChAdOx1 BDBV viral vector vaccine. These programs aim to provide the first approved prevention method for BDBV, for which no vaccines or treatments currently exist.
