Bundle-Hospital General Universitario Elche-surgical site infection

This multi-component surgical bundle was developed by the Hospital General Universitario Elche to reduce the incidence of surgical site infections (SSI) in patients undergoing elective laparoscopic colorectal surgery. The bundle consists of three primary antimicrobial interventions: intraperitoneal irrigation with a solution containing clindamycin and gentamicin, the use of triclosan-impregnated sutures for fascial closure, and the application of mupirocin ointment over skin staples. This combination approach targets potential bacterial contamination at multiple anatomical levels—intraperitoneal, fascial, and cutaneous—to provide comprehensive prophylaxis against post-operative infections. The bundle is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 randomized clinical trial to determine its efficacy compared to standard care measures.
