Overview

Bungarus candidus antivenom is a biologic product consisting of polyclonal antibodies specifically raised against the venom of the Malayan krait (Bungarus candidus), a highly neurotoxic snake found in Southeast Asia. The primary mechanism of action is neutralization of neurotoxins present in B. candidus venom, which are responsible for presynaptic neuromuscular inhibition and potentially fatal paralysis. The main indication is the treatment of systemic envenoming following bites from B. candidus, with early administration shown to reduce hospitalization time and improve clinical outcomes[1][2][3][5]. This monovalent antivenom does not cross-neutralize venoms from other Bungarus species[2][6]. It was developed and is primarily manufactured by the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute (Thai Red Cross Society) in Thailand, with additional production by Venom Research & Antivenom Production Unit (Vietnam) and related units[5][8].
