Overview

Bungarus multicinctus-candidus Antivenom is a pharmaceutical drug used to treat envenoming caused by bites from the *Bungarus multicinctus* (many-banded krait) and *Bungarus candidus* (Malayan krait) snakes. These snake venoms are highly neurotoxic, primarily containing pre-synaptic phospholipase A2 (PLA2) β-bungarotoxins and post-synaptic α-bungarotoxins. These toxins disrupt neuromuscular transmission, leading to progressive neuromuscular paralysis and potentially fatal respiratory failure. The antivenom functions by neutralizing these specific toxins, thereby preventing or reversing their paralytic effects. Early administration of the antivenom is critical for optimal efficacy, as established neurotoxicity, particularly from β-bungarotoxins, can be resistant to treatment due to irreversible damage to nerve terminals.
