Overview

BUPI is a novel lozenge formulation of the local anesthetic **bupivacaine**, originally developed by researchers at **Hvidovre University Hospital** (Copenhagen University Hospital, Hvidovre) and later licensed to **Moberg Pharma**. The drug is designed to provide localized pain relief in the oral cavity for patients suffering from oral mucosal pain conditions such as **burning mouth syndrome**, **Sjögren's syndrome**, **oral lichen planus**, and **oral mucositis**. BUPI works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in the oral mucosa, thereby inhibiting the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses. The lozenge formulation is intended to dissolve slowly in the mouth, providing a topical anesthetic effect with minimal systemic absorption, which helps to reduce the risk of systemic side effects associated with local anesthetics.
