Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Group 2-Northwestern University-labor pain refers to a specific treatment arm in a randomized, double-blind clinical trial (NCT01074190) conducted at Northwestern University. This arm utilized an epidural maintenance solution consisting of bupivacaine 0.8 mg/mL (0.08%) combined with fentanyl 1 μg/mL. Bupivacaine is a long-acting local anesthetic that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse conduction. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid that acts as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor to provide analgesia. The study specifically investigated the impact of varying cumulative doses of epidural fentanyl on breastfeeding success in parous women, finding that concentrations up to 2 μg/mL did not adversely affect breastfeeding rates at six weeks postpartum.
