Overview

Spinal anesthesia + ultrasound-guided Genicular nerves block is a combined anesthetic and analgesic procedural intervention primarily used for managing postoperative pain in patients undergoing knee arthroscopy. This regimen involves the administration of spinal anesthesia, typically utilizing hyperbaric bupivacaine and fentanyl, followed by an ultrasound-guided genicular nerve block using bupivacaine. Bupivacaine is a local anesthetic that inhibits nerve impulse conduction by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid that provides analgesia by acting as an agonist at mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system. This specific procedural combination was investigated by Tanta University in a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial (NCT05269095) to evaluate its efficacy compared to other regional anesthesia techniques such as the adductor canal block (ACB) and IPACK block.
