This interventional drug combination is a specific mixture used for spinal anesthesia in patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. It comprises isobaric bupivacaine (a local anesthetic), fentanyl (an opioid analgesic), and dexmedetomidine (a selective alpha-2 adrenergic agonist). In this specific formulation, dexmedetomidine serves as an adjuvant to the local anesthetic to prolong the duration of the sensory and motor blockade and extend the period of postoperative analgesia. The combination is administered via the intrathecal route. This specific protocol is being evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial sponsored by King Abdulaziz Medical City to compare its efficacy against intravenous administration of the adjuvant.
