Bupivacaine + glucose is a combination formulation used primarily for spinal (subarachnoid) anesthesia. It consists of the amide local anesthetic bupivacaine and a high concentration of glucose (commonly as dextrose), resulting in a hyperbaric solution. The addition of glucose increases the density (baricity) of the solution relative to cerebrospinal fluid, allowing for more predictable spread and control during spinal anesthesia procedures. Bupivacaine acts by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on neuronal membranes, inhibiting nerve impulse generation and conduction to produce local or regional anesthesia. This combination is widely used for surgical procedures requiring spinal blocks, including cesarean section and lower abdominal or limb surgeries[4][5][6].
