Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bupivacaine collagen sponge (brand name XARACOLL) is a drug-device combination product developed by Innocoll for the management of postoperative pain. It consists of 50 mg of bupivacaine hydrochloride, a local anesthetic, impregnated into a 70 mg bioresorbable Type I bovine collagen matrix. The implant is designed to be placed directly into the surgical site during closure, where it provides immediate hemostasis and subsequently releases bupivacaine over 24 to 48 hours. By blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in local neurons, it prevents the generation and conduction of pain impulses. It was FDA-approved in 2020 for use in adults following open abdominal umbilical hernia repair.
