Overview

Bupivacaine extended release liposome injection is a novel formulation of the amide-type local anesthetic bupivacaine, encapsulated in multivesicular liposomes (DepoFoam technology) to provide prolonged postsurgical analgesia. The drug is designed for single-dose infiltration or perineural use and achieves long-acting pain relief by gradually releasing bupivacaine at the site of administration over up to 72 hours. This reduces opioid requirements and improves patient satisfaction after surgery compared with placebo or standard formulations. It is not bioequivalent to other forms of bupivacaine and should not be substituted on a milligram-to-milligram basis[2][3][5][8].
