Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Bupivacaine hydrochloride collagen-matrix implant** is a surgically placed, bioresorbable collagen drug-delivery implant developed by Innocoll and marketed as **Xaracoll**. The implant consists of purified fibrillar type I bovine collagen impregnated with bupivacaine hydrochloride; the matrix biodegrades locally while releasing bupivacaine at the operative site. Bupivacaine reversibly blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in peripheral nerves, preventing nociceptive action-potential initiation and conduction. Xaracoll was FDA-approved in 2020 for postsurgical analgesia for up to 24 hours following open inguinal hernia repair in adults, but Innocoll discontinued the commercial product in late 2024.
