Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bupivacaine HCl Injection 0.25% is a sterile, isotonic local anesthetic solution containing 2.5 mg/mL of bupivacaine hydrochloride as its active ingredient. It belongs to the amide class of local anesthetics and acts as a small molecule drug that works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve membranes, thereby inhibiting the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses and producing local anesthesia and analgesia. It is commonly known under the brand name Marcaine (among others). The drug is used for infiltration, nerve block, caudal, and epidural anesthesia, and is indicated for postoperative pain management. In the specific clinical context identified, it is being used by Atatürk University in a randomized clinical trial (ESPB vs SPB for Postoperative Pain in Mastectomy) comparing ultrasound-guided erector spinae plane block (ESPB) versus serratus plane block (SPB) for postoperative pain control in patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy. The 0.25% concentration is notable for providing effective analgesia with a longer duration of action compared to many other commonly used local anesthetics, and it has a rapid onset of action.
