Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bupivacaine liposome is an extended-release formulation of the amide-type local anesthetic bupivacaine, utilizing the DepoFoam multivesicular liposomal delivery technology. This system consists of numerous non-concentric lipid-based chambers that encapsulate the drug, allowing for a slow, controlled release of bupivacaine into the surrounding tissue over an extended period, typically providing analgesia for up to 72 hours. It is indicated for single-dose infiltration in adults to produce postsurgical local analgesia and as an interscalene brachial plexus nerve block for postsurgical regional analgesia. By blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on the neuronal membrane, it prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby providing effective pain relief while potentially reducing the requirement for postoperative opioids.
