It is derived from the dried root of *Bupleurum chinense* DC. or *Bupleurum scorzonerifolium* Willd. The preparation is primarily used to treat symptoms associated with the common cold and influenza, such as fever, headache, and cough. In TCM theory, it is used to "resolve the exterior and clear heat" (解表散热), specifically targeting Shao Yang syndrome, which manifests as alternating chills and fever, chest fullness, and irritability. The active constituents include saikosaponins, which exhibit antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. It is an approved pharmaceutical product in China, typically administered as an oral granule.
