Overview

This combination therapy refers to the pharmacological components of the Duke University 'PARTNER UP' program, a telemedicine-based harm reduction intervention designed for people who inject drugs (PWID). The program integrates the administration of two fixed-dose combination medications: buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone) for medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Buprenorphine acts as a partial mu-opioid agonist to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, while naloxone is included as an abuse deterrent. The PrEP component consists of two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that prevent HIV replication. The program was piloted at syringe services programs in North Carolina to assess the feasibility of using telemedicine for follow-up care in this high-risk population.
