This is a combination of three pharmaceutical agents: buprenorphine, tipranavir, and ritonavir. Buprenorphine is a partial agonist at the mu-opioid receptor used primarily for opioid dependence treatment. Tipranavir is a non-peptidic HIV protease inhibitor indicated for the treatment of HIV infection resistant to multiple protease inhibitors; it must be co-administered with low-dose ritonavir, which acts as a pharmacokinetic booster by inhibiting CYP3A4-mediated metabolism and increasing plasma concentrations of tipranavir. The combination may be encountered in patients with both opioid dependence and HIV infection requiring salvage antiretroviral therapy. Pharmacokinetic interactions are significant: co-administration can reduce exposure to certain buprenorphine metabolites without causing withdrawal symptoms but may decrease efficacy of antiretroviral therapy due to reduced plasma levels of tipranavir[1][2][6]. This combination should be used cautiously due to complex drug-drug interactions.
