Overview

Burdock root extract is a botanical preparation derived from the root of the plant Arctium lappa, widely used in traditional medicine and as a dietary supplement. It contains a range of compounds, including inulin, phenolic acids (such as caffeic and chlorogenic acids), polyacetylenes, lignans (arctiin, arctigenin), flavonoids, and tannins[1][4][6]. The primary mechanisms of action observed in preclinical and limited human studies include anti-inflammatory effects (inhibition of proinflammatory mediators, reduction of cytokine levels such as IL-6 and TNF-α), antioxidant activity (scavenging of free radicals, upregulation of endogenous antioxidant defenses), antimicrobial properties (activity against bacteria, fungi, viruses), hypoglycemic effects, and weak antineoplastic activity (induction of cancer cell apoptosis and interference with signaling pathways)[1][2][5][6]. Burdock root extract has been investigated in small trials for use in osteoarthritis, metabolic syndrome, and advanced pancreatic cancer; it is also commonly used for skin conditions (topical and oral)[1][4][5]. However, there is insufficient clinical evidence to recommend burdock root extract for any specific disease or medical condition[1][5].
